He went further, accusing Sifuna of being sent by a political “sponsor” and suggesting that some politicians wanted to frustrate or extort businessman Aliko Dangote.

Sifuna has rejected the accusations, maintaining that his questions are part of his responsibility as a legislator to demand accountability over major government projects. From housing to the refinery

The latest clash is not an isolated incident. In September, Sifuna criticised the government’s affordable housing programme, arguing that Nairobi’s informal settlements were fundamentally linked to low incomes rather than simply a shortage of houses.

Ruto responded the following day, saying Sifuna was wrong on the economics of housing and arguing that construction itself creates jobs and puts money into the pockets of young people.

The two politicians have also clashed over the government’s handling of Tata Chemicals Magadi. Ruto criticised leaders associated with Linda Mwananchi for what he described as a failure to understand the issues surrounding exploitation of Kenya’s natural resources.

The exchanges have become more significant as Sifuna has moved from being primarily an opposition politician in Parliament to openly positioning himself for a bigger national political role.Sifuna’s presidential ambitions

Sifuna’s political profile has grown rapidly through the Linda Mwananchi movement, which has been mobilising opposition supporters across the country.

On September 13, the movement held a major mobilisation in Nairobi, culminating in a rally at Jacaranda Grounds where Sifuna declared his readiness to seek the presidency.

His growing profile was reflected in a Politrack survey released on October 1. The poll placed Ruto first with 45.1 per cent, while Sifuna came second with 19.6 per cent, making him the highest-rated opposition aspirant in the survey. Kalonzo Musyoka followed with 10.3 per cent. The survey covered 20,419 respondents and was conducted between September 15 and 25.

The figures do not represent an election result, but they illustrate why Sifuna has increasingly become part of the national presidential conversation.

Why Sifuna?Ruto’s repeated responses to Sifuna appear to be taking place against the backdrop of an increasingly competitive 2027 political environment.

Sifuna is young, highly visible and has built a reputation for forceful criticism of the government. His position in Nairobi also gives him access to one of the country’s most politically influential constituencies.

His emergence through Linda Mwananchi has also provided him with a national platform beyond his Nairobi Senate seat. The movement’s September rally in Nairobi was presented as a direct challenge to Ruto’s administration, while Sifuna has continued to call for opposition unity.

The political tension has also drawn former President Uhuru Kenyatta into the debate. Ruto has repeatedly alleged that Uhuru is sponsoring Sifuna and other opposition politicians an accusation that has become part of his attacks on the senator. In August, Ruto challenged Uhuru to provide more financial support to Sifuna rather than leaving opposition politicians to raise money from ordinary Kenyans. Sifuna, however, has continued with his political mobilisation.

On October 3, he responded to Ruto’s latest attacks by questioning why the President had shifted his focus to him after years of attacking the late former Prime Minister Raila Odinga. Sifuna argued that the attacks were connected to the 2027 contest and insisted that Nairobi would not automatically support Ruto.

A political rivalry taking shape. What began as exchanges over government policies is increasingly developing into a broader political confrontation.

Ruto has accused Sifuna of lacking a clear alternative agenda and of being used by political sponsors, while Sifuna has positioned himself as a critic demanding accountability from the government.

For now, Ruto remains the stronger candidate in available polling, while Sifuna is still building a nationwide political structure. But the senator’s rapid rise has made him difficult to ignore.

And that could explain why, whenever Sifuna raises a political question, the President increasingly chooses to answer him personally.

The 2027 contest is still months away, but the Ruto-Sifuna exchanges suggest that their political rivalry has already begun in earnest.

By Gogo Nicolies.

President William Ruto’s recent public remarks have increasingly placed Nairobi Senator Edwin Sifuna at the…

[1

post-211","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","hentry","category-uncategorized
["GET
