Transport costs increased by 15.6 per cent, adding further pressure on household budgets.

The figures highlight the challenge facing the government as it seeks to improve living standards while implementing its economic reform agenda.

Food security remains a concern

Food security remains a key test of the administration’s promises. A report by The Standard indicated that approximately 2.7 million people were facing crisis-level hunger, despite the government’s efforts to increase agricultural production and reduce the cost of farm inputs.

The administration has promoted subsidised fertiliser as part of its strategy to support farmers and increase food production. However, the continued pressure on food prices raises questions about how effectively increased production is translating into affordable food for consumers.

The challenge is particularly significant for low-income households, which spend a substantial proportion of their income on basic necessities.

Mixed results from government reforms

The government has also introduced reforms in healthcare, housing, digital services and access to credit, arguing that these initiatives are creating opportunities and improving service delivery.

A government scorecard published in October 2026 highlighted progress in areas such as affordable housing construction, agricultural support and the expansion of digital government services.

However, questions remain about whether these programmes are reaching their intended beneficiaries and delivering the expected results.

The transition to the Social Health Authority has also faced implementation challenges, including concerns about access to services and payments to healthcare providers.

Meanwhile, young people continue to seek reliable employment opportunities as the government promotes digital work, technical training and overseas employment.

Accountability ahead of 2027

An independent tracker by Mzalendo Trust provides another measure of the government’s progress. Its Kenya Kwanza Promise Tracker listed 254 manifesto promises, of which 25 were marked as completed, 150 as ongoing, 41 as broken, 15 as stalled, 19 as not started and four as modified, according to its August 30, 2026 update.

The tracker’s classifications are independent assessments based on publicly available information rather than official government determinations.

As the next election approaches, the administration is likely to face increased scrutiny over the delivery of its commitments.

For voters, the central issue will be whether economic reforms and development programmes translate into lower living expenses, better access to essential services and more employment opportunities.

The government’s record therefore presents a mixed picture of reported progress in some sectors and persistent challenges in others, leaving implementation and the impact on ordinary Kenyans at the centre of the national debate.

President William Ruto’s administration is facing renewed scrutiny over the cost of living, delayed reforms…

[13

post-819","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","hentry","category-politics
["GET
