Billionaire entrepreneur Elon Musk has announced plans to give one share of his space exploration company, SpaceX, to every child in the United States in 2027, in a proposed giveaway estimated to be worth more than $10 billion.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Musk made the announcement on Monday, October 19, 2026, through a post on X, formerly Twitter, stating: \u201cNext year, I will give one of my SpaceX shares to every kid in America. This will be the first of many.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The announcement has attracted attention because of its potential scale, with approximately 72 million children under the age of 18 living in the United States. At a reported share price of $146.03, distributing one share to each child would amount to approximately $10.5 billion. The final value, however, would depend on the share price when the distribution takes place.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Although Musk has announced his intention, he has not yet publicly explained the full distribution process, including eligibility requirements, how children would receive the shares or whether the initiative would operate through a government-backed investment programme.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

One possible route is through the Trump Accounts initiative, a US government-backed programme that provides investment accounts for eligible children. Such accounts could offer a mechanism for holding shares on behalf of minors, although Musk has not confirmed that this will be the method used for his proposed giveaway.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

SpaceX is a major player in the commercial space industry, developing rockets and spacecraft and operating satellite internet services through Starlink. The company completed its initial public offering in June 2026, with its shares beginning to trade on the Nasdaq Global Select Market under the ticker symbol SPCX.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The proposed distribution would give millions of children direct ownership in a major technology company, potentially allowing them to benefit if its value increases over time. However, share ownership does not guarantee profits, and the value of an investment can fall as well as rise.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The announcement also comes amid a broader discussion about how technology companies should share the financial benefits of their growth. A day earlier, artificial intelligence company Anthropic announced plans to allocate 5% of its equity to a new public benefit fund. Musk subsequently advocated distributing shares directly to members of the public before announcing his own proposal.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

While the pledge has generated interest, important questions remain about implementation, the selection of eligible children, the management of investments held by minors and the timing of the transfers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
