Kenyans are marking one year since the death of former Prime Minister Raila Amolo Odinga, with a memorial gathering scheduled for Thursday, October 15, 2026, at Migwena Cultural and Sports Grounds in Bondo, Siaya County.

The anniversary marks one year since Raila died in India on October 15, 2025, aged 80, bringing an end to a political career that spanned decades and shaped Kenya’s democratic journey.

The memorial programme is expected to bring together members of the Odinga family, friends, supporters and members of the public to remember his life, political struggles and contribution to the country.

The gathering is scheduled to begin at 7 a.m., with prayers, tributes and other activities celebrating his life and legacy.

The anniversary follows several days of commemorative activities organised to honour the former Prime Minister. These include an intergenerational dialogue in Kisumu and a candle-lighting ceremony at Kang’o ka Jaramogi in Bondo on Wednesday evening.

The mausoleum at Kang’o ka Jaramogi, where Raila was laid to rest alongside his father, Jaramogi Oginga Odinga, was also formally dedicated earlier this month.

The memorial site has become a focal point for remembrance as family members and supporters reflect on Raila’s contribution to Kenya’s political development.

The first anniversary also provides an opportunity to reflect on his long involvement in the country’s multiparty democracy, his role in constitutional reform and his decades of political activism.

As the commemorations take place, the family has called for peace, unity and political tolerance, urging those attending to keep the occasion focused on remembering his life and legacy.

For many Kenyans, the anniversary is not only a moment of mourning but also an opportunity to reflect on the ideals, struggles and aspirations associated with a man widely known as Baba.
