Orengo renews call for opposition unity parties

Siaya Governor James Orengo has renewed his call for opposition unity, saying political change ahead of the 2027 General Election will require cooperation among leaders and agreement on a common agenda.
In a statement published on October 1 and reported the following day, Orengo expressed support for efforts to unite opposition leaders and identify a single presidential candidate to challenge President William Ruto in the next election.
The governor also endorsed the Linda Mwananchi movement, which has emerged as a platform for opposition figures seeking to mobilise supporters around an alternative political agenda.
Orengo’s statement comes amid discussions within opposition circles about party formation, leadership structures and how competing political ambitions should be handled before the election.
The process of selecting a presidential candidate is a significant issue for political coalitions because parties must agree on how to nominate their preferred candidate and coordinate their campaigns. Differences over leadership and strategy can influence how such alliances are organised.
Orengo has previously indicated that competing ambitions should be resolved through a credible nomination process rather than by automatically assigning a presidential ticket to one individual.
His position reflects a wider debate about whether opposition groups should organise around an established party, form a new political vehicle or create a coalition bringing together several political organisations.
The governor has also been associated with plans for a new political party expected to operate under the initials LDP. The proposed party forms part of the changing political landscape as leaders consider their options ahead of 2027.
However, the precise structure of future alliances and the eventual presidential candidates remain matters for the political groups involved to determine.
For voters, these developments may shape the range of candidates and policy proposals presented during the next election cycle. Political parties are expected to outline their positions on the economy, public services, employment, governance and other national issues as they seek public support.
The opposition unity debate is therefore likely to remain an important topic in Kenyan politics as parties work to establish their leadership arrangements and campaign priorities.
