Mombasa United defeated Kariobangi Sharks 2–1 in the first leg of their promotion-relegation play-off at Mbaraki Sports Club, taking a narrow advantage into the return fixture scheduled for Nairobi.
The match, played on October 1, was an important contest for both teams, with a place in the 2026/27 SportPesa League at stake. Mombasa United used their home advantage to secure the victory, although Kariobangi Sharks managed to score a late goal that kept the tie open.
After a closely contested first half, Mombasa United increased their attacking pressure following the break. Dennis Toeri opened the scoring in the 55th minute, rewarding the hosts’ improved attacking efforts.
The goal gave Mombasa United momentum, and they extended their advantage eight minutes later when Rawhide Waziri converted a penalty. The second goal put the coastal side in a promising position as they sought to protect their lead.
Kariobangi Sharks responded by committing more players forward in search of a goal. Their efforts paid off in the 83rd minute when Wayne Dalvine Otieno found the net, reducing the deficit to one goal.
The late strike was important for the Nairobi-based side because it reduced the margin separating the two teams before the return match. It also ensured that Mombasa United would have to remain organised defensively in the second leg.
Following the final whistle, both teams had reasons to remain focused. Mombasa United secured the win, but their work was not complete. Kariobangi Sharks, meanwhile, retained an opportunity to overturn the aggregate score in front of their home supporters.
The return fixture is expected to determine which club secures the final place in the 2026/27 SportPesa League. Both sides will need to balance their attacking ambitions with defensive discipline as they prepare for the decisive encounter.
The first-leg result has therefore set up a competitive second match, with the league place still to be decided.
