FKF Awards Mombasa United Promotion After Violence Abandons Kariobangi Sharks Playoff

Mombasa United have secured promotion to the 2026/2027 SportPesa League after the Football Kenya Federation (FKF) awarded them a 2-0 victory over Kariobangi Sharks following violence that forced the abandonment of their promotion playoff match.
The ruling, announced on Friday, October 9, confirmed Mombasa United as the overall playoff winners after Kariobangi Sharks were found to have forfeited the second-leg encounter at Ulinzi Sports Complex in Nairobi on October 6.
The match was abandoned in the 64th minute after the referee awarded Mombasa United a penalty. Players protested the decision, and the situation escalated when a section of supporters and Kariobangi Sharks’ kit manager reportedly invaded the pitch and assaulted referee John Sulwe.
The referee was assessed by medical personnel and declared unable to continue, forcing the match officials to abandon the game.
Kariobangi Sharks were leading 2-1 when play stopped, a result that had levelled the tie at 3-3 on aggregate. However, after reviewing reports and hearing submissions from the parties involved, FKF’s Leagues and Competitions Committee awarded the second leg to Mombasa United by a 2-0 scoreline.
The decision gave Mombasa United a 4-3 aggregate victory and secured their place in the top flight for the 2026/2027 season.
The two clubs had entered the second leg after Mombasa United won the first leg 2-1 in Mombasa on October 1.
The penalty would have given Mombasa United an opportunity to change the result of the second leg and regain the aggregate advantage. However, the protests and violence brought the contest to an unexpected end before the penalty could alter the score.
FKF’s ruling changed the final outcome of the tie. Instead of Kariobangi Sharks’ 2-1 lead in the abandoned match, Mombasa United were credited with a 2-0 win, giving them a 4-3 aggregate victory over the two legs.
The ruling confirmed Mombasa United as the overall playoff winners and secured their place in the top flight for the 2026/2027 season.
FKF has referred the reported acts of violence and misconduct to its Disciplinary Committee for further proceedings and possible sanctions.
The ruling highlights the consequences that misconduct can have on clubs, particularly when a match cannot continue because of violence.
For Mombasa United, the decision marks an important step in the club’s history as they prepare to compete in the country’s top football division.
For Kariobangi Sharks, the ruling brings disappointment after their fight to retain their top-flight position ended with an abandoned match and a disciplinary decision against them.
As the disciplinary process continues, the incident raises questions about the safety of match officials and the responsibility of clubs and supporters to maintain order during football matches.
The focus now shifts to how FKF will handle the remaining disciplinary matters and what measures can help prevent similar incidents in Kenyan football.
