MACHAKOS WOMAN REP ASPIRANT RITA NDUNGE SPARKS DEBATE AFTER DISTRIBUTING TROPICAL SWEETS

BY GRACE KYALO
Machakos County politician Rita Ndunge has sparked public debate after a video showing her distributing Tropical sweets to residents during a political engagement circulated online.
Ndunge, who serves as the County Executive Committee Member (CECM) for Youth, Sports, Gender and Social Welfare in the Machakos County Government, has declared her intention to contest for the Machakos County Woman Representative seat in the 2027 General Election.
In the video, Ndunge is seen handing out sweets as she interacts with members of the public. Some youths present appear to call on her to address them, with one asking her to speak to the young people.
However, the incident attracted criticism from some residents who questioned why the aspirant was distributing sweets instead of directly responding to the youths’ concerns.
One young man expressed frustration, saying he wanted the politician to speak to the young people rather than continue handing out the sweets.
The incident subsequently triggered reactions on social media, with Kenyans debating the kind of engagement they expect from aspiring leaders ahead of the next general election.
Some commentators argued that young people need meaningful conversations about unemployment, economic opportunities and development rather than symbolic gestures during political activities.
Others maintained that residents also have a responsibility to question aspirants about their plans and proposed solutions to the challenges facing their communities.
The episode has added to wider discussions about campaign handouts and how politicians seek to connect with potential voters ahead of elections.
With the 2027 General Election approaching, aspirants across the country are increasingly seeking public visibility and support. The incident involving Ndunge has renewed questions about whether such gestures adequately address the expectations and priorities of voters.
Ndunge’s campaign for the Woman Representative seat is expected to unfold alongside those of other aspirants seeking to represent Machakos County in Parliament.
