The ongoing Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (KCSE) examinations have been marked by tragedy following the deaths of two female candidates in Homa Bay and Siaya counties.

In Homa Bay, 17-year-old Conjestina Achieng died on Monday evening after developing severe chest pains, hours after sitting her Chemistry examination.

According to her class teacher, George Ogweno, the school noticed that she was unwell and contacted her parents to take her for medical attention. Her mother, Pamela Atieno, said they rushed her to hospital but were informed that she had already died.

Meanwhile, in Siaya County, an 18-year-old candidate identified as Vivian Adhiambo was allegedly killed at her parents’ home in Powo village.

Her body was discovered by neighbours, while police are holding a middle-aged man identified as Dancun Ochieng in connection with the incident.

Vivian was a student at Ndhene Secondary School and had been preparing to sit her national examinations.

Her brother, Ben Otieno, described her as a humble girl and called on the government to strengthen efforts to address killings in the area.

The two incidents have left families and communities mourning as thousands of candidates across the country continue with their national examinations.
