Portuguese football star Cristiano Ronaldo has beaten his longtime rival Lionel Messi to win the first-ever BOAT (Ballon d’Or of All Time) award following a worldwide fan vote.

The 41-year-old Al-Nassr forward received the recognition after football fans voted his outstanding 2008 season at Manchester United as the greatest Ballon d’Or-winning campaign.

Ronaldo finished ahead of Argentina’s Lionel Messi, whose remarkable 2012 season came second. Ronaldo’s 2017 Ballon d’Or-winning season secured third place in the voting.

The special award was introduced to recognise the greatest individual performances among football legends who have won the Ballon d’Or at least twice.

During the 2007/2008 season, Ronaldo scored 42 goals for Manchester United, helping the English club win both the Premier League and UEFA Champions League titles.

His impressive performances earned him his first Ballon d’Or in 2008. He later won four more awards in 2013, 2014, 2016 and 2017, bringing his total to five.

The voting also featured other football legends, including Johan Cruyff, Michel Platini, Marco van Basten and Brazilian star Ronaldo Nazário. However, Cristiano Ronaldo and Messi dominated the results.

The victory adds another achievement to Ronaldo’s successful football career and has renewed discussions among supporters about who deserves to be called the greatest footballer of all time.
