Journalists demand probe into Francis Ode’s arrest

The Crime Journalists Association of Kenya (CJAK) has called for an independent investigation into the arrest and alleged assault of Citizen TV reporter Francis Ode during protests in Nairobi.
In a statement released on Tuesday, October 20, the association said Ode’s release from police custody was a positive step. However, it insisted that the authorities should still establish what happened during his arrest and address the claims of mistreatment.
Ode was arrested while covering demonstrations against high fuel prices in Nairobi’s Central Business District (CBD). His arrest has raised concerns about the safety of journalists working in areas where protests are taking place.
CJAK said releasing the reporter should not end the matter. The association wants an independent investigation to establish the circumstances of the incident and determine whether any wrongdoing occurred.
The incident has renewed attention on the need to protect journalists while they report on public events. Journalists play an important role in informing the public, especially during demonstrations and other major events.
The call for an investigation comes amid concerns about the treatment of media workers while carrying out their professional duties.
