Sakaja Dumps UDA for ODM Ahead of 2027 Elections.

Nairobi Governor Johnson Sakaja has officially left the United Democratic Alliance (UDA) and joined the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) ahead of the 2027 General Election. He hopes to defend his governorship seat on an ODM ticket.
Sakaja was officially welcomed into ODM on Monday, November 2, at the party’s headquarters, Chungwa House, in Nairobi. The event was attended by senior party officials, including Deputy Party Leader Simba Arati and National Chairperson Gladys Wanga.
The governor said his decision was influenced by his close relationship with the late former Prime Minister Raila Odinga, who founded ODM. Sakaja said Raila had encouraged him to join the party before his death.
Sakaja also said he would bring his experience, energy and commitment to serving Nairobi residents to the party. He expressed hope that his move would help strengthen ODM’s support in the capital ahead of the next elections.
His decision follows months of speculation about his political future. On October 31, Sakaja attended an ODM event at Jacaranda Grounds, where he asked Nairobi residents to advise him on which political party to join.
The move places Sakaja in the race for the ODM ticket as he seeks a second term as governor. However, he may face competition from other leaders interested in the seat, including Embakasi East MP Babu Owino and Makadara MP George Aladwa.
Sakaja was elected Nairobi governor in 2022 on a UDA ticket after defeating Jubilee candidate Polycarp Igathe. His move to ODM marks a major political shift as parties and leaders position themselves ahead of the 2027 General Election.
It remains to be seen whether joining ODM will help Sakaja secure the party’s nomination and win another term. The final decision will depend on the party’s nomination process and the support he receives from Nairobi voters.
